If your wrists ache after a day of typing, the advice you usually get is "buy an ergonomic keyboard", which is not very helpful when you do not know what that means or whether a mechanical keyboard makes things better or worse. Here is the practical version, based on what actually causes the ache.
The three things that hurt your wrists
Wrist pain at a desk almost always comes from one of these, and each has a different fix.
- Extension: your wrists bend upwards because the keyboard is too tall. Fixed by a lower keyboard.
- Deviation: your hands angle outwards to reach the keys because the keyboard is too wide, usually thanks to the number pad pushing your mouse away. Fixed by a smaller keyboard.
- Force: you bottom out hard on every keystroke. Fixed by lighter switches.
Work out which one is yours before you spend anything. Most people have the second and do not realise it.
If the keyboard is too tall
A low-profile mechanical keyboard sits much closer to the desk, so your wrists stay flatter. This is the single biggest change for anyone coming off a laptop who bought a chunky mechanical board and started hurting.

If your mouse is too far away
This one surprises people. A full-size keyboard with a number pad pushes your mouse hand out wide, and holding your arm at that angle all day is what hurts, not the typing at all.
A compact keyboard pulls your mouse back in front of your shoulder. If you rarely touch the number pad, this is close to a free fix.

If you hammer the keys
Mechanical keyboards let you choose your switches, which membrane keyboards do not. Lighter switches need less force per press, and over thousands of keystrokes that adds up. Hot-swappable boards let you change them later without soldering, so you are not locked into your first guess.

Do not forget the other hand
Half of desk-related wrist pain comes from the mouse, not the keyboard. If you fix the keyboard and still ache, the mouse is the culprit, and a vertical mouse or trackball is the usual answer.

The honest caveat
