Amazon sells two cheap streaming sticks in Australia, the Fire TV Stick 4K and the Fire TV Stick Lite, and they are only about twenty-five dollars apart. So which one do you actually need? The honest answer takes about a minute.
The real differences
There are only three that matter:
- Resolution. The 4K does 4K Ultra HD. The Lite tops out at Full HD (1080p). This is the big one.
- Speed. The 4K has a faster chip and Wi-Fi 6, so it stays snappy for longer as apps get heavier. The Lite is fine now but will feel its age sooner.
- Remote. Both come with an Alexa voice remote, but only the 4K's remote can control your TV's power and volume out of the box.
That is basically it. Same apps, same setup, same interface.
So which should you buy?
Buy the 4K if your main TV is a 4K TV. You paid for those extra pixels, so feed them. The sharper picture and the longer useful life are worth the small extra cost on the screen you watch every night.

Buy the Lite if the TV is not 4K, or it is a second TV. On a bedroom TV, an older Full HD set, or a caravan, 4K does nothing for you because the screen cannot show it. Save the money and get the Lite. It runs the exact same apps.
